Hyssop Essential Oil 1/3 fl oz: C
Historically, hyssop herb was regarded as a sacred plant and was used as a strewing herb and incense to purify holy places. The scent of the oil is reminiscent of the herb; spicy, sweet, woody and strong. It blends well with clove, lavender, rosemary, myrtle, sage, clary sage and citrus oils. Aromatherapy benefits: refreshing, purifying. Hyssop's volatile oils have an anti-spasmodic and carminative action. This makes it useful for hacking coughs, other upper respiratory problems, and digestive discomfort. Hyssop is also a useful calmative for the overanxious. As Grieve points out, Hyssop can relieve the lungs of mucous and bacteria that block bronchial tubes. Grieve's classic 'A Modern Herbal': 'It admirably promotes expectoration, and in chronic catarrh its diaphoretic and stimulant properties combine to render it of especial value.' 'It is usually given as a warm infusion, taken frequently and mixed with Horehound. Hyssop Tea is also a grateful drink, well adapted to improve the tone of a feeble stomach, being brewed with the green tops of the herb, which are sometimes boiled in soup to be given for asthma.' King's 1898 Dispensatory: 'Stimulant, aromatic, carminative and tonic. Principally used in quinsy and other sore throats, as a gargle, combined with sage and alum, in infusion sweetened with honey. Also recommended in asthma, coughs, and other affections of the chest, as an expectorant.' 'The leaves, applied to bruises, speedily relieve the pain, and disperse every spot or mark from the parts affected. The infusion may be given freely; the volatile oil, in doses of 1 or 2 drops.' Hyssop oil is non-irritant, non-sensitizing but does contain pinocamphone and should therefore be used in moderation an avoided during pregnancy, by people suffering from epilepsy. Hyssop oil gives a feeling of alertness and helps with anxiety and fatigue. It could be useful in convalescence as it is a tonic. Hyssop oil can be effective in cases of respiratory problems and viral infections such as colds, coughs, sore throats, influenza, bronchitis, asthma, catarrh and tonsillitis. On the digestive system it could help with colic, flatulence and indigestion.
